The S55 turbo engine, which BMW F87 M2 C, F8x M3 and M4 F8x has two air filter boxes that supply fresh air to the turbos. The OE air filter boxes have panel filters that are quite small and thus impede airflow.
Our goal in developing our new intake system was to ensure it was closed, so it wouldn't suck in hot air from the engine bay, which many aftermarket intake systems do. If the intake system sucks in hot air from the engine bay, this directly equates to warmer charge air (higher IAT). In all the testing we conducted during the development of our entire BMW F8X M2C/M3/M4 lineup, we clearly see how the powerband directly equates to IAT (intake air temperature) and turbocharger inlet restriction.
When developing our upgraded intake system, we started with a 3D scan of the engine bay of our M3 Competition. This gave us an exact 3D model of the available space in which to design our intake system.
We discovered that we could use large BMC dual-cone air filters with their large filtering area for high flow, not only when new (small filters begin to flow poorly after a short period of use). We could also use 3" (76mm) tubes, which we designed with as few and smooth bends as possible to reduce airflow restriction. To prevent hot air from being sucked into the air filters, we developed heat shields and covers that, together with rubber gaskets, ensure our system supplies the engine with pleasantly cool air.
Our intake system uses the OEM fresh air intake ducts, which feed the air cleaners with fresh air from the grille. We've tested these, and they're not a restrictive part of this system. Given the pressure zone that builds up behind the grille at speed, adding scoops won't make much of a difference.
Our intake pipes are constructed from 76 mm (3") mandrel-bent, seamless aluminum tubing. Both the intake pipes and heat shields are finished with a durable, matte black textured powder coating. For the airbox covers, we opted for a lightweight polycarbonate design with a beautiful satin black finish.
All these improvements have resulted in an impressive power increase of +10 hp at peak, and in the mid-range, we see up to +20 hp / +40 Nm. This test was conducted on our M3 with a BootMod3 Stage 1 (93) tuning.
Significant advantages with the do88 Performance intake system (compared to stock figures):
– +10 HP power increase at peak!
– +20 HP / + 40 Nm increase in the mid-speed range!
– 769 CFM air flow at 0,025 bar/0,36 psi pressure drop (678 CFM), do88 13% higher!
– The BMC filters are regenerable for a long service life!
– Improved intake sound! If even more intake sound is desired, the system can also be used without the cover on the air filter housing. This may result in a higher intake air temperature.
