B58 engine compared to the F80 M3/M4 S55
The B58 engine shares similarities with the S55 engine found in the F80 M3/M4 models, as both engines feature a water-cooled intercooler combined with heat exchangers (water coolers) located at the front of the car. These coolers cool the water flowing through the intercooler, which absorbs heat from the charge air before entering the engine. The main difference lies in the B58's liquid-cooled intercooler design, which is integrated into the intake manifold, while the F80 S55's intercooler is a separate unit mounted on top of the engine.
Challenges of the B58 intercooling system
A common problem with tuned B58 engines is the rapid heating of the intercooler system, especially on track days. High intake air temperatures cause the ECU to reduce power or put the car into limp mode. Even during sporty road driving, the ECU can reduce the ignition timing and reduce power due to high intake temperatures.
Our solution
It's obvious that this system requires increased cooling capacity to prevent overheating. Part of our solution is our do88 Performance Front Mount Intercooler. The do88 Performance Front Mount Heat Exchanger is designed to provide increased cooling capacity and prevent overheating. It features:
- 66% larger core volume than original equipment (OE).
- Double-row core that is 48mm thick, increasing the cooling surface by 120%.
- Triple pass design that allows water to flow through the water cooler three times instead of just once, maximizing the use of the mesh surface.
- All aluminum construction, complete with durable TIG welded end tanks.
- Increased liquid volume for optimal heat dissipation.

Installation
No modifications are required to install the larger do88 Performance front-mount heat exchanger (see installation instructions). Our heat exchanger includes mounting points for the OE transmission cooler.
